Jesus is not only defeating the devil, He is equipping us with keys to defeating him: the word (Luke 4:4), worship (Luke 4:8) and the fear of God (Luke 4:12).
The leading of the spirit can result in you being in the wilderness. You can be led to a place where you are tempted. The wilderness is the place of preparation and the place of testing.
- The key to temptation is understanding and communicating the word of God. For each temptation, Jesus had a word for the context he was in.
- Temptation #1 (Luke 4:4): Deuteronomy 8:3
- Temptation #2 (Luke 4:8): Deuteronomy 6:13
- Temptation #3 (Luke 4:12): Deuteronomy 6:16
This interaction with the devil was spiritual. Because in Luke 4:5, the kingdoms of the world were “revealed“ to Jesus.
“Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”” - Luke 4:5-7
The Devil is endeavoring to get Jesus to question who He is. Don’t forget who you are: a son of God. You can’t defeat a man of God, who already knows what the end will be, and who lives from the end to the now. Jesus knew that the kingdoms of this world would become the kingdom of our Lord and Christ.
And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’ and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ” Luke 4:9-12
